I am a believer a firm set of principles followed by rules that are clearly unambiguous should be placed at the login stage. after the AFF debacle. eg. Every person is unique and is entitled to their own opinion. No posts containing personal derogratry material aimed at a fellow member will be permitted. No posts containing racist or homophobic overtones will be permitted. This needs a lot of thought to do correctly. A vote by the members on the resultant page would be very democratic. EZ I put my hand up to draft it.

I believe that it's very important to establish procedure for dealing with trolls and bannable offenses - so that people know whta when something against the ruels happens, that they should not argue, just report. This will be much easier to maintain, and much more effective, if there's a moderator on at all times - that way things are addressed immediately. Also, this avoids the murky area of a defense against a troll/derogatory person being interpreted as an attack on the poster.
If some members don't understand why the action was inappropriate, then a mod could put up in writing something to explain why that action isn't appropriate (obviously doesn't have to happen for the really obvious things, like posting porn and such).
