For tigger Open Terminal(applications - Utilities. Then type the following: sudo nano /etc/hosts Terminal will then ask you for your password, because you have invoked the security privileges of the superuser. Type your password in. you should get something like ## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost
A hash, #, is a comment. Don’t touch those first 4 . Move the cursor down in nano using the arrow keys. type in 78.47.99.206 http://www.aspiesforfreedom.com; it should now look like this; 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost 78.47.99.206 www.aspiesforfreedom.com
Now save. (ctrl+o) . Hit enter to name it hosts, then hit ^x to exit nano. You'll need to flush the cache, which is done via "lookupd -flushcache" or "dscacheutil -flushcache"

I'm betting you are correct; isn't OSx built on a Linux kernel? if you can wing it, make a new thread for it

I had to use apple-S to save, enter didn't save it as hosts and I had to use apple-Q to quit and option-apple-E to empty cache. I wonder if it worked... Nope, still got 404.

Would that work for the newest version (I think it's the newest version I have; I bought it a couple months ago, it's Leopard is what it's called, but I don't remember the version NUMBER - 10.5 something I think.)

I am so very confused, i've never used my mac for anything serious. I got stuck on the terminal asking me for my password, it didn't... it didn't find anything. I typed it in the search box because that was the only typing thing.

Thanks, I was doing really well and was pleased with myself. But then it decided to close unexpectidly, which has scared me off. Also i'm sleepy. I'll attempt tomorrow. Does AFF really start working again once this is done? I find it hard to believe, but you should know I am raised by a person who thinks a dragon lives in her computer... and needs feeding

yes, once you fix the hosts file, everything works again. AFF is up, it's been up all along, the problem is NOT with us, it's with 1&1 who borked our DNS.
